Dear Potential Donor:
Jax Youth Poetry Slam, Inc. (JYPS) is the first and only nonprofit organization in Jacksonville, FL specifically created and dedicated to youth poetry, spoken word and poetry slams. It was formed to promote literacy, public awareness and critical thinking for at risk youth. Our mission is to ensure that the Jacksonville youth have a supportive, dynamic and challenging community in which to discover their powerful voices- through written and spoken word- and use them to express their views, strengthen self-esteem and engage them in opportunities that address the various sociopolitical issues that affect them.
The 2016 Jax Youth Poetry Slam was held on Saturday, April 16th, 2016 at the Jacksonville Main Library in downtown Jacksonville, FL. This free event is held annually at the Jacksonville Main Library and encourages youth ages 10-19 to showcase their public speaking skills through performance poetry in which they compete for prizes. The competition is in its 12th year and has grown from the Robert Kennedy Center to the Jacksonville Main Library. The seven finalists earned a spot on the P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment) Slam Team that will be competing and representing Jacksonville at the annual Brave New Voices (BNV) International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. This year the festival will be held in Washington, DC from July 12 – 16, 2016.
The students that participate in our programs have shown significant improvement in school attendance and scholastic achievement. We are very excited about the growing interest in our programs. In addition, the students are looking forward to the summer showcase (Saturday, June 25th at The Performance Academy), and the opportunity to compete at Brave New Voices. All sponsorship proceeds will go towards expenses accrued from registration and travel fees associated with the BNV International Youth Poetry Slam Festival.
